Windows Installation

This section is for Macintosh users who are NOT familiar with Print2Pict and other Macintosh issues, and who do not need the shorthand of the Quick Install Section. There is a short sub-section at the end of this section for Windows users, dealing with download and decompression issues. Windows users are then referred to the Quick Install section.

Requirements

Mac® OS Requirements

  • 64 Megs of RAM (128 recommended)
  • PowerPC-based Macintosh
  • MacOS 8.6 or higher is required. Brushfire requires FileMaker Pro 5.x (or higher) and does not run on FileMaker Pro 2.x, 3.x or 4.x!
  • Internet Explorer 5.X or higher is required.
  • 30 or more Megs of hard disk space, depending on your reporting requirements.

Windows® Requirements

  • 64 Megs of RAM (128 recommended)
  • Pentium or Pentium II processor
  • Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP.
  • 30 or more Megs of hard disk space, depending on your reporting requirements.

Mac OS Installation

Download Brushfire from the Brushfire web site, to your Hard Drive.

Your browser may be configured to decompress the Brushfire archive into a folder automatically. If not, you will find a file on your desktop whose name starts with Brushfire, followed by some version codes, and ends in .sit or .hqx. Such a file is called an Archive. If your browser didn't decompress it, then you will have to do so manually. Free or low-cost software to decompress archives is available on the Web.

Once you have the Brushfire folder (the folder name may also contain a version code), you are ready to begin installation.

Place the Brushfire folder on your hard disk (NOT on your desktop).

Print2Pict Install

In the Brushfire folder is a file named Print2Pict 3.7.1ƒ.sit . This file contains Print2Pict 3.7.1, which is the latest version. Print2Pict is a shareware program that is required by Brushfire to process your FileMaker script information. If you don’t already have Print2Pict 3.7.1 installed, you will need to install it by decompressing the Print2Pict 3.7.1ƒ.sit archive.

In the Print2Pict folder is a sub-folder named "Docsƒ". Inside Docsƒ is the Print2Pict README $$ file containing the shareware information for Print2Pict. We encourage users to support the fine work of the developer of Print2Pict .

Make sure to move the P2P Extensionsƒ folder ( with nine Print2Pict extensions), and the Print2Pict extension file to the HardDrive:System:Extensions folder.

Print2Pict is a special Chooser extension that allows applications to print to non-printer destinations. Print2Pict will be used to convert the FileMaker™ Pro scripts to text for analysis.

Print2Pict has several items that must be configured properly to create usable output by Brushfire . Typically, this configuration needs only to be done once, as Print2Pict remembers the configuration settings between print jobs.

To configure Print2Pict follow these simple steps:

  1. Select Print2Pict from the Chooser.
  2. Select Page Setup from the File Menu. You will get the Print2Pict Page Setup dialog box. (Don't worry if the mouse cursor shows as a wristwatch, just proceed anyway.)
  3. Click on "Options" to open a panel with several tabs on the left and a window for changing settings on the right.
  4. Click on the "Extensions" icon in the left-hand frame, fourth from the top. Print2Pict needs you to tell it where its Extensions folder is. Click on the "Select" button, and navigate to the "Extensions" folder inside the System Folder. Once you are inside the Extensions Folder, click on the "P2P Extensionsƒ" folder. The name will appear on a button at the bottom of the dialog box. Click on this button to select the P2P Extensions folder.
  5. Select the "General" option tab on the left. In the "Register As" area, make sure the "Printer:" is set to "Undefined" and change "Color:" from "When possible" to "Never".
  6. Now click Done and then click OK in the Page Setup Dialog to save your changes. (You have to do this BEFORE you can set the Disposition.)
  7. Choose Page Setup again. Set the Disposition to "Print to Text".
  8. Close the Page Setup Dialog to complete the initial configuration!

Note: the key Print2Pict items that must be configured (one time) are:

  • Print2Pict Extensions folder should be set to the location where you have the Print2Pict extensions: HardDrive:System:Extensions folder.

  • Print2Pict output disposition must be set to: Print To Text.
  • Print2Pict Options for General settings should be set shown in the Dialog Box below.

  • Print2Pict Folder setting should not be to the desktop. If the FileMaker Print dialog is not set to Print All Scripts, and instead is set to Print All Records, or the Print2Pict Disposition is not set to Print To Text the desktop could be populated with a few thousand files, a major drag. We recommend using the Brushfire Script Output folder included in the Brushfire folder for this purpose.

The key items that must be configured each time script information is processed by Print2Pict are:

  • Select Print2Pict from the Chooser to be the printer.
  • For each FileMaker File in the solution, perform a Print... command choosing, choosing the Disposition: Print to Text, and the Print All Scripts setting. The script text output will be saved to disk into the folder selected when Print2Pict was configured.
  • Also, be sure to move or trash the old script text output files of prior analyses before creating new script text output files. Print2Pict DOES NOT delete or overwrite old files.

Print2Pict Configuration

Follow these instructions for the configuration of the Print2Pict extension under the MacOS.

Move the mouse to the Apple Menu on the top left side of the toolbar. Click on the Apple icon. From the menu displayed, select the Chooser and release the mouse button. This launches the Chooser from the Apple Menu. Move the cursor, using the mouse, to the Print2Pict icon on the left side of the Dialog Box and click to select. The following Dialog Box is displayed:

After selecting Print2Pict as above, close the Chooser. The following Dialog Box may appear:

Print2Pict Extension Settings

From the File menu, select Page Setup. The following Dialog Box appears:

Click on the Options button located on the right side and a Dialog box will appear. On the left side of the Dialog Box, move the cursor to Extensions, click the mouse ONCE and it will highlight, as shown in the image below:

Click on the Select button located on the right side of the Dialog Box.

After the next dialog box appears, move the mouse to the button at the top of the Dialog Box, click on that button and select Desktop. The following Dialog Box appears:

Then scroll down to select your Hard Drive as shown above. Click ONCE with the mouse. Click on the Open button located on the lower right side of the Dialog Box. The following Dialog Box appears:

Scroll down and select the System Folder as shown above. Click ONCE with the mouse. Click on the Open button located on the lower right side of the Dialog Box. The following Dialog Box appears:

Then scroll down to select Extensions as shown above. Click ONCE with the mouse. Click on the Open button located on the lower right side of the Dialog Box. The following Dialog Box appears:

Scroll down to select P2P Extensions f as shown above. Then click on the bottom button located in the middle of the Dialog Box that says P2P Extensions f. The following Dialog Box appears:

Click on the Done button located on the lower right side. The following Dialog Box appears:

Click on the OK button located on the right side of the Dialog Box.

Print2Pict Output Disposition

From the File menu, select Page Setup, the following Dialog Box appears:

Click on the Disposition button from the selected list, make sure that Print to Text is selected as shown in the image above. Then click on the OK button located on the right side of the Dialog Box.

Print2Pict General Settings

From the File menu, select Page Setup. The following Dialog Box appears:

Click on the Options button located on the right side and a Dialog box will appear. On the left side of the Dialog Box, move the cursor to General, click ONCE and it will highlight, as shown in the image below:

Set File name to Automatic, File creator to Print2Pict, and Color to Never. Click the Done button located on the lower right side. The following Dialog Box appears:

From the File menu, select Page Setup. The following Dialog Box appears:

Click on the Options button located on the right side and a Dialog box will appear. On the left side of the Dialog Box, move the cursor to Folder, click ONCE and it will highlight, as shown in the image below:

Click on the Select button located on the right side of the Dialog Box. After the next dialog box appears, move the mouse to the button at the top of the Dialog Box, click on that button and select Desktop. The following Dialog Box appears:

Then scroll down to select your Hard Drive as shown above. Click ONCE with the mouse. Click on the Open button located on the lower right side of the Dialog Box. The following Dialog Box appears:

Then scroll down to select Brushfire as shown above. Click ONCE with the mouse. Click on the Open button located on the lower right side of the Dialog Box. The following Dialog Box appears:

Scroll down to select Brushfire Script Output . Then click on the bottom button located in the middle of the Dialog Box that says Brushfire Script Output . The following Dialog Box appears:

Click on the Done button located on the lower right side. The following Dialog Box appears:

Click on the OK button located on the right side of the Dialog Box. The Dialog Box will close. Print2Pict Folder Settings are now complete.

Windows Installation

Download Brushfire from the Brushfire web site, to your Hard Drive.

If your browser didn't decompress (unzip) it, then you will have to do it manually. Free or low-cost software to decompress archives is available on the web.

Once you have the "Brushfire" folder (the folder name may also contain a version code), you are ready to begin installation.

Windows users should also refer to the Quick Install.
